III. Skillman Avenue Street Lighting Photos 2010
December 1, 2010 / Woodside / Queens Buzz. It was a warm November night with temperatures in the 40's following a windswept rain earlier in the day. Between fifty and one hundred folks from the neighborhood turned up to enjoy a bit of hot chocolate and listen to the commemoration of the brand new street lights along Skillman Avenue.
Government officials including City Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer and State Senator elect Michael Gianaris mingled with the crowd before making a few remarks about the positive effect holiday lighting has on people's moods [and perhaps by association local commerce]. Sunnyside Chamber Of Commerce president Ira Greenberg introduced the government officials and Gary O'Neil of nearby Cafe Aubergine sponsored the hot chocolate.
The crowd consisted of a few Sunnyside / Woodside oldsters and a notable show of parents with strollers. Everyone seemed to be in a pretty good mood as they occupied the corner in front of the corner laundromat. The lights went on, the cheers went up, folks mingled a while longer and then departed. II. Sabba Park - Christmas Tree Lighting Photos
November 30, 2010 / Sunnyside & Woodside / Queens Buzz. It was a warm night as between fifty and one hundred residents of the neighborhood showed up to enjoy the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at Sabba Park in Woodside. The event was sponsored by the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce and the refreshments were sponsored by White Castle.
The Sunnyside Drum Corps came out to play a few stirring numbers, and a choral group sang a few holiday tunes. After the lighting the red robed man with the big white beard appeared out of an NYC police vehicle. Apparently he was given an escort by the police since there wasn't enough snow to use the reindeer and sleigh.
A few remarks were made by City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer and Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce president Ira Greenberg. The lights went on, the cheers went up and after some mingling, the crowd dispersed. Click this link to view a slide show / photos of the Christmas Tree Lighting in Sunnyside 2010.
