The Long Island City Neighborhood
Flux Factory FlexesLIC / Long Island City Queens / March 5, 2010. At long last I made a connection with the Flux Factory. They’d been on my radar for about two years, during which time I had made several feeble attempts to contact them via email and telephone. Over the course of those two years, I remotely watched them wrangle through ‘life threatening’ issues like finding a new space, as their former ‘factory’ had been committed to another purpose, and for a while they ran a ‘virtual factory’. The Flux Factory is an amalgam of artists that seems to operate as a sort of socialistic whole. Yeah, I’m not sure exactly what that means either, but intuitively I think it's an apt description. The program includes one week of the first series of five one act plays, the second week includes another series of five one act plays and in the third week the five best plays as selected by the audiences in the first two weeks, will be shown. The one act plays are all original work and mostly done by local writers, producers, directors, actors and actresses. 24 Hours @ LPACLong Island City / November 7 & 8, 2009. I visited LaGuardia Community College last night to see for myself, exactly what the 24 Hours event was all about. It's essentially a worldwide sharing of original theatre, dance and music via the internet. The international piece [inbound from other parts of the world] was due to resume at 2 am, so I decided to forgo it in favor of sleep, but I did get a chance to talk to the people responsible for the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center as well as their collaborators, the Internationalists, and a few of the students to begin to piece together what the program is all about. NYC Marathon Photos 2009LIC Long Island City Queens / November 1, 2009. We have some great photos of the NYC Marathon that we've just uploaded into a photo album on the site, all of which were taken in Queens. There are approximately one hundred of them, including photos of the runners, the crowds, the water stand workers and a few policemen. Long Island City is about the fifteen mile mark. We started taking photos of the NYC Marathon 2009 in Queens around 10.30 am, which is about two and a half hours after the handicapped participants had begun and about an hour and a half after the runners had begun. Generally, as you can see by the photos, things were pretty quiet in LIC. We then jumped into the Queens Buzz Sky cam and around 11.30 am took photos of the 2009 NYC Marathon runners crossing the Queens Boro Bridge [click title link above]. Then a bit after 12 noon, we returned to LIC to photograph hordes of nyc marathon runners making the 2009 event theirs in Long Island City Queens. The rest, as they say, is history, although we have one more page of photos of the nyc marathon runners 2009 crossing through Queens. Click this link to a report we published earlier on the NYC Marathon 2009 event. Have a good day. |

LIC Space Kicks Off Fall Art SeasonSeptember 1, 2009. Aaahhh, the fall is finally upon us. Warm dry sunny weather and the Queens fall art season has already begun. Last night LIC Space hosted a closing reception for the fall preview at one of its three spaces. The reception included cheese and wine, as the attendees were surrounded by oil paintings and metallic sculptures. It was an interesting crowd, to say the least, and it looks to be a fun venue. This report also tells the tale of an enterprising woman who came to New York to make her rendezvous with destiny. She's been working hard the past eight years to help find space for fellow artists to enable them to continue their journey into the vast unknown we call the future. Long Island City Real EstateReal Estate In LICLong Island City LIC / Queens / January 25, 2010. The Long Island City real estate market has a lot of rental and sales inventory, with a lot more coming online in the next year or two. Demand for Long Island City real estate has slackened from its torrid pace of just a couple of years ago, but interest is still keen. This should be a buyers' market - sellers motivated to sell and a lot of units to choose from, but while prices have declined, they are still high relative to the rest of the Queens real estate market, while still trading at a discount to Manhattan. Orphan's ThanksgivingLike Going Home Without The HassleLIC - Long Island City / November 26, 2009. I spent the better part of this Thanksgiving with the 'orphans' of The Creek And The Cave in LIC. Seems for the past four years, with one exception, they've been hosting a free Thanksgiving Dinner for their friends and it's open to the public. It's hosted at the Creek and the food preparations, like I remember they used to at home, begin the evening before. This is a story about my Thanksgiving Dinner with them, as I became an honorary orphan this year.
